New Wave AI

In the 16 months since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, generative AI has vaulted from niche curiosity to a powerhouse of innovation, reshaping our digital landscape with breathtaking speed. The dizzying pace has captured the attention of investors, entrepreneurs, and everyday AI-curious consumers, like us!

Andreessen Horowitz is a prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm that’s been tracking web traffic data to follow market trends and early leaders like ChatGPT. Six months after their initial research, they revisited their analysis and uncovered some surprising data.

While giants like ChatGPT and Midjourney maintain their popularity, new players are emerging. The presence of 22 newcomers in web traffic rankings underscores this trend. Here's a streamlined look at key insights:

  • AI Companionship Goes Mainstream: From just a couple to a whole posse, AI companions are the new norm. Character.AI is leading this pack, proving that digital friends are becoming an everyday thing for many.

  • Work Smarter, Not Harder: Productivity tools are all the rage. Think meeting notes with Otter.ai or video summaries with Eightify. The future is about weaving AI seamlessly into our workflow.

  • Creativity Unleashed: Music and content creation tools like Suno are hitting their stride in bringing our song lyrics to life. These tools are not just about the novelty, but about tapping into our creative spirits in ways we hadn't imagined.

  • A New Breed of AI Tools: The report hints at a future where AI companions expand beyond just being chat pals to offering mentorship, entertainment, and even healthcare advice. The versatility and potential here are mind-blowing.

The report distinguishes between web and mobile app usage, revealing unique preferences and behaviors across these platforms. Mobile apps show a particular affinity for personalization and utility features, such as avatar creation and educational assistance. We’ll be covering some of the apps featured in the report in the coming weeks. It’s exciting to see what the next six months will bring!

AI Tutoring

At-home educational tutoring is one area where AI assistance has the potential to be truly transformative. Imagine AI stepping in as a personalized tutor, offering just the right nudge when school assignments get tough.

We searched online for “top AI tutoring apps” and ended up with a confusing sea of options. Many of these apps are simply putting a new spin on familiar faces like ChatGPT, while others seem to be jumping on the bandwagon without really bringing something new to the table. However, a few items stood out:

  • ChatGPT & Chatbots:  ChatGPT (or your favorite chatbot) does a credible job if you take care to craft the prompts carefully (e.g. (“You are a K-12 education specialist. Write a 20-question multiple choice quiz to assess the knowledge of an 8th grader on US 19th Civil War history” or “Suggest a framework for a 10th grader to analyze the poetry of Walt Whitman and its importance to American literature”.

  • Tutorly.ai: Offers a comprehensive suite of AI tutoring tools, including question and answering, paraphrasing assistance, and essay preparation. Tutorly features a user-friendly design and allows users to try before committing to a paid subscription.

  • Math Tutoring with AI: Given concerns over chatbots' accuracy in solving basic math, exploring specialized AI is recommended. Interactive Mathematics provides an extensive package for math learning, including lessons, study plans, a math problem solver, on-demand tutoring, and test preparation.

The fine print: ChatGPT has a free plan or a faster/smarter version for $20/month. Tutorly.ai has a nominal price of $10/month, but is currently offering full access for $1/month. Interactive Mathematics has a lot of free material available (including the problem solver) and costs $5/month for the full range of services.

If you’re looking for some help, your favorite chatbot is certainly an option but coming up with the right prompt (and all those personal details) can be daunting. We found ToastWiz, an AI wedding speech-writing business designed to take the stress out of those special occasion words.

ToastWiz has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wired, and NBC News. Here’s how it works:

ToastWiz has a short form that guides you to put your stories and feelings into words. The cost is $29.99 and you’ll get 3 ToastWiz wedding speech drafts within minutes. Speeches typically run between 350 to 600 words, translating to about 3-5 minutes of speaking time, depending on your pace.

Here’s a little tip: the more personal stories you share with ToastWiz, the longer and more personalized your speech will be.

Game for a go? ToastWiz uses OpenAI's latest innovation, GPT-4. Let us know if you take the ToastWiz plunge and whether you think it’s worth the value. In the age of AI, even the daunting task of wedding speeches can be a piece of cake—or should we say, a slice of wedding cake?
