AI Family Management

How many frazzled parents or caregivers do you know who are struggling to balance the demands of family life with their personal and professional responsibilities?

Schedules overflow with appointments, school events, and family commitments, often leaving little time for self-care or unplanned moments of joy. For caregivers supporting elderly family members, the added stress can be overwhelming. The never-ending mental gymnastics and physical exhaustion can lead to serious burnout.

Enter Ohai, a groundbreaking AI-powered household assistant created by Sheila Lirio Marcelo, the visionary founder of Care.com.  Ohai, which playfully stands for "Oh, hi," was launched last month and offers a lifeline to the "chief household officer" with a leap forward in family tech.

How does Ohai (or “O” for short) transform the chaos into calm? Here's a brief overview:

• Calendar Coordination: you can forward emails from teachers or coaches to O, and it will seamlessly integrate these events into your personal calendar.

• Appointment Scheduling: O takes the initiative to book essential appointments for family members, from healthcare checkups to home maintenance tasks.

• Daily Summaries & Potential Conflicts: O identifies scheduling conflicts and suggests adjustments, ensuring smooth operation of both family and work commitments.

• Personal Time: O finds those rare free moments and suggests activities for relaxation or fitness, prioritizing your well-being.

• Family Harmony: By handling the cognitive load, O ensures that you're not carrying the burden of organizing alone, fostering a more balanced and less stressful family environment.

Ohai offers its service at less than $30 per month. The platform is currently available online and accessible via text or email. Plans for a mobile app with expanded features will roll out over the next few months.

Like many language learning models (LLMs), Ohai is still on a learning curve. The website says humans are available to step in if O gets off track. We’re not exactly sure what that means, but good to know that humans are there to help!

ChatGPT Chatter

If the high cost of car repairs has ever left you wondering if you’re being taken for a ride, you’re in luck! ChatGPT can now offer a helping hand, especially if you've got a visual of the issue.

One of our team members, Justin, recently ran into a problem with his brakes. When he took his car to a new mechanic, he got the bad news: the car needed new rotors and brake pads. Although the mechanic provided digital images of the brake components, Justin couldn’t help feeling a bit skeptical, so he sought a second opinion from ChatGPT.

Using ChatGPT 4 (the $20 per month premium subscription), he uploaded an image (see above) and asked ChatGPT to “diagnose the problem.” 

ChatGPT’s response was impressively detailed, identifying rust and wear patterns on the brake rotor, scoring due to worn-out brake pads or debris, and potential issues from past repairs or modifications.

The chatbot suggested that Justin might need to consider rotor replacement or resurfacing, check the brake pads, inspect the brake caliper, and ensure all components were correctly installed.

Justin, who barely knows his brake rotor from his elbow, found the information invaluable. It gave him the confidence to question his mechanic's recommendations without feeling out of his depth.

Thankfully, his mechanic was honest, but having ChatGPT's insights meant Justin could have challenged any exaggerated problems or unnecessary repairs.

This AI second opinion not only helped Justin make an informed decision but also bolstered his trust in his mechanic. It's a perfect example of how a bit of technological assistance can empower even the most non-expert of car owners to navigate the often-confusing world of auto repairs with confidence.

AI-powered Poetry

We’ve got a great idea for how to show your love this Valentine’s Day. How about an AI-generated poem for that special someone in your life?

We tested a few (free) AI poem generators, including ChatGPT, and landed on one from PoemAnalysis, a website created by a team of passionate writers and literary experts who possess extensive knowledge and experience in the field of poetry.

Team member Lori’s husband is Canadian and of course, that means he’s an avid hockey fan. Recently, he took a part-time job at a hockey rink driving a Zamboni. (yes, he’s officially a mini celebrity at the rink now!)  Lori thought, what better way to show her love than through the power of poetry? All it took was a simple prompt, (write a poem about my husband’s love of driving a Zamboni) and the result? A beautifully crafted “Symphony on Ice” in an instant! We highly recommend giving it a try for someone you love.
