Travel & Adventure

Anyone need a travel planning buddy?

If there’s one thing AI can do to make our lives easier, it should be scanning the web for everything to make our dream vacation a reality. Flights? Check. Cozy hotels? Double-check. Weather forecasts, top-notch suggestions, and day-to-day itineraries? Let’s do this!

AI-powered travel services are popping up to streamline the entire trip-planning process, from bookings to local recommendations and neatly packaged agendas.

We looked at a number of free sites, including Vacay Chatbot, iPlan.ai (an iOS or Google app), Curioso (for road trips), Wonderplan.AI, and Trip Planner AI (requires a login). They all have their pluses and minuses, but the one we like most was Roam Around.

We asked it to craft a one-week vacation plan to the breathtaking Bahias de Huatulco on Mexico’s west coast, a hidden gem we stumbled upon in a travel newsletter.

The lowdown: The result was attractive and clean: on the right two thirds of the screen is a beautifully curated and presented proposed itinerary with links to hotel suggestions, restaurants, and places of interest.

On the left is Roamy, a chatbot you can use to change your itinerary and ask questions about location, customs, transportation, tipping norms, and more. If you sign in, you can save the trip, create a pdf of the travel plan, and book the recommended attractions.

Red flag warning: As with all AI outputs, facts need to be validated before you hit the “book” button.

Career Building

All you job seekers out there – is the grind of job hunting getting to you?

Between the endless online application forms, constant resume customization, long response times and interview ghosting, the process of landing a great job can be a miserable one. Fortunately, AI-powered solutions are stepping in to provide some relief.

Consider these AI tools your secret weapon to conquer the challenges of modern job hunting.

LazyApply's job search tool automatically applies to thousands of jobs across platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed. It streamlines the application process, sparing you from all that repetition. The Basic package ($99 for lifetime access) has a daily limit of 150 applications, but also gives you resume improvement tips and day wise analytics. The more advanced (and costlier) plans give you access to several other hiring platforms.

Hot tip: Check out the free cover letter generator on LazyApply. There’s even a free resignation letter generator!

Sonara specializes in helping early to mid-career job seekers who rely on online job applications. Their platform is optimized for finding full-time positions in competitive fields, typically requiring a bachelor's degree. After signup, there’s a brief survey (to better understand your needs), then you’ll be asked to submit your resume. Sonara does the rest, scouring the web for relevant job opportunities and applying for the ones you want with an AI-generated cover letter. You can start with the free trial before jumping into one of the paid plans.

Massive offers a service ($39 per month) that uses “investor tools to discover the most exciting companies,” then auto applies for positions with an AI-matching algorithm and a human-powered review team. A majority of the jobs are tech-related and the service provides up to 50 applications every week.

Red flag warning: While AI can help job seekers, it’s not perfect. Robo-applying can sometimes produce badly written, mangled sentences. Still, one software engineer told Wired magazine he sent out 5,000 applications and landed 20 interviews.

Our take on it: There’s no question that networking and personal recommendations are going to become even more important in the future.

Four Generations of the Compagno Family circa 1918

Family History

In the hustle and bustle of our modern world, it’s easy to forget the incredible stories of our trailblazing ancestors. It's even harder to imagine them as vibrant young men and women who once pioneered their own daring adventures. Now, there’s an AI-powered tool that can breathe life into your treasured family photos. Whether you’re a history buff, genealogy enthusiast, or simply someone curious about the past, get ready to see your ancestors or loved ones in a whole, new light.

Deep Nostalgia from MyHeritage.com offers a unique experience that bridges generations. With Deep Nostalgia, your still photos can spring to life: blinking, turning, and even smiling!

Here's how it works: create a free account, upload your chosen digital photo, and watch as My Heritage works its magic, enhancing your image before animating it. The AI then applies the best-suited facial movements to create a 15-second gif that's not only downloadable but also secure. MyHeritage promises not to share your precious memories with anyone else.

We took a test drive: Our team member, Lisa, is a history buff who loves digging deep into her family tree. She chose a 1939 photo of her grandmother as a trial run. Click on the video below and you’ll see how Nonnie comes to life!

For Lisa, this animated version was utterly charming and eerily captured “Nonnie’s” coquettish flair. Lisa’s mother was astounded and equally delighted by the rush of mother/daughter memories that flooded back.

The whole team gave it a try and agreed that “smiling” images seemed to provide a wide range of expression and animation. Neutral and glum expressions, so often found in older photographs, seem less animated and a tad creepier.

The jury is out on the reason for the closed lip, neutral expression in early photographs. Some historians cite slow camera speeds while others say it may have been due to bad dentistry. Either way, we’re sure our ancestors had no clue that AI would one day breathe life into those old expressions!

Deep Nostalgia encourages you to spread the joy on social media for all your family and friends to enjoy. You can upload and animate up to 5 images for free before you have to pay for a subscription that unlocks other features such as genealogy research, DNA testing, and building a family tree.

Coming Soon AI

Every so often, we stumble upon an AI breakthrough that’s so exciting, we simply have to share it -- even though it’s not necessarily here now. In a game-changing move, California-based Invenio Imaging is on the brink of unleashing a medical marvel. Imagine surgeons receiving critical insights on tissue biopsies in just three minutes, right in the operating room!

What to know: Invenio's NIO Laser Imaging System is a “digital pathology tool” at the heart of this innovation. This groundbreaking technology could transform clinical decision-making, potentially leading to instant molecular diagnoses for personalized treatments.

Their NIO Glioma Reveal product is already approved for clinical use in Europe. Invenio's AI capabilities are poised to reshape brain tissue analysis, helping identify cancerous cells with remarkable accuracy.

What’s on tap: But it doesn't stop there. Invenio's alliance with renowned institutions like the University of Michigan and New York University has created a deep learning model that can identify cancer biomarkers with a staggering 93% accuracy in just 90 seconds. This breakthrough opens doors to predicting patient responses to chemotherapy and ensuring successful tumor removal during surgery.

What’s to Come: Teaming up with Johnson & Johnson's Lung Cancer Initiative, Invenio's sights are set on another monumental challenge: lung cancer. Their AI solution is on track to swiftly detect cancer in lung biopsies, potentially revolutionizing care for millions worldwide.
