AI Better Health Helpers

Plus: Granola gold & harmony hub

This caught our eye this week: OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) and Arianna Huffington are teaming up to create a personalized “AI health coach”.

In a Time op-ed, Open AI CEO Sam Altman and Huffington explain that the coach will use top peer-reviewed science with your health data to offer actionable advice. Their goal? To help the 129 million Americans with at least one major chronic disease.

There are definitely significant issues to work out, especially with privacy concerns, but It's an intriguing step towards personalized healthcare.

In this week’s edition, we explore another medical advance called fastMRI, an AI note-taking sidekick, the latest in the humanoid robotics revolution, and AI-assisted music tracks, no experience necessary. Let’s dive in!

AI Medical Advance

Have you, or someone you know, ever had an MRI scan? For many, it feels a little like torture — confined in a narrow tube, enduring the piercing noise of the machine, and waiting anxiously as time seems to stretch on. For children, trying to keep still is a monumental challenge that can result in failed scans.

We were excited to hear about fastMRI, a groundbreaking partnership between Meta AI and NYU Langone Health. With fastMRI, AI-powered technology is leveraged to cut MRI scanning times and enhance image clarity, making the process quicker and more comfortable for patients.  Here’s how it works:

  • Neural network: The team developed an AI model trained on de-identified knee MRI data from NYU Langone.

  • Data efficiency: The AI removes 75% of the raw scan data, then reconstructs full images from the remaining information.

  • Accuracy: The AI-generated images match the quality of standard MRI scans, ensuring reliability for radiologists and clinicians.

You can learn more about fastMRI in this recent report from CBS News.

Shorter scan times mean less time in the machine and a more comfortable experience. It also means more people can get scanned in a day.

fastMRI is now standard at NYU Langone with no extra cost to patients. The open-source technology has been adopted by MRI manufacturers worldwide and is poised for widespread adoption. With fastMRI, the days of feeling stuck in a tube are numbered.

AI Productivity

Ever left a meeting feeling like your notes were a jumbled mess? We’ve all been there. While Zoom’s AI companion left us wanting more, a new app called Granola grabbed our attention.

Picture this: You’re in a meeting, jotting down notes as usual. But behind the scenes, Granola is working its AI magic, listening and transcribing everything. Once the meeting wraps up, it transforms your scribbles into a clear, comprehensive summary. Here’s what we love about Granola:

  •  It enhances your usual note-taking style (no need to change your habits!)

  • You can easily fact-check by clicking on any part of the summary to see the original transcript.

  •  It offers handy templates for different meeting types (think hiring interviews, brainstorming sessions, and pitches).

  • The summaries are spot-on, well-organized, and useful.

We’ve tried it and we’re impressed. Granola might just become our new favorite work buddy. Want to give it a whirl? Granola is available as a Mac app with a generous free tier (25 meetings per month). After that, it’s $10 per user per month.

Say goodbye to cryptic notes and hello to crystal-clear meeting summaries. Your future self will thank you.

AI Robotics Revolution

Earlier this year, humanoid robotics company Figure AI deployed its Figure 01 model at the BMW auto facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Now, you can watch the robot in action using its neural networks to translate visual data with this new full use case video.

Figure 01’s advanced capabilities come from a collaboration with OpenAI, the creator behind this new large vision-language model. Back in March, Figure AI released a jaw-dropping video, showcasing Figure 01 putting away dishes, cleaning up trash, and handing an apple to a human when they said they were hungry. Two months earlier, Figure 01 was seen making coffee in this video.

We love watching how these humanoid robots are evolving. They’re now capable of executing a wide range of manufacturing jobs, including handling sheet metal, operating in the body shop, and overseeing the warehouse. Figure 01 even knows how to self-correct its mistakes.

The California-based company sees these advancements as a way to improve productivity and ease chronic labor shortages. Another benefit? Deploying humanoid robots in dangerous environments to reduce human injuries.

Along with BMW, major car manufacturers such as Mercedes, Honda, and Hyundai are also experimenting with humanoid robots.

Figure AI faces stiff competition from Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and others who are developing general-purpose humanoid robots. But, in our book, Figure AI is definitely one to watch.
